[ti:TIME Lists World's 100 Most Influential People] [ar:Jim Tedder] [al:AS IT IS] [by:www.51voa.com] [00:00.00]TIME Magazine has released a list of 100 individuals [00:04.26]it says are the "most influential" people in the world. [00:09.46]These men and women come from many countries. [00:12.84]They are government leaders, activists, artists and celebrities. [00:19.15]The list includes U.S. President Barack Obama, [00:22.81]Cuban leader Ra¨²l Castro [00:25.51]and Pope Francis, the head of the Roman Catholic Church. [00:29.50]Nancy Gibbs is the managing editor of TIME magazine. [00:34.15]She says she want people to understand that [00:38.30]just because people have power does not mean they have influence. [00:42.80]"Power's reach is limited to those you can control. [00:46.47]Influence's reach is boundless when any great idea, [00:52.82]any cause, or cure or creation can be shared instantly [00:58.53]and globally from the palm of your hand." [01:01.88]Nigerian activist Obiageli Ezekwesili is on the list. [01:07.99]She leads the "Bring Back Our Girls" movement. [01:11.69]She believes being on the list will help [01:15.18]in finding the more than 200 schoolgirls [01:18.23]kidnapped last year by the militant group Boko Haram. [01:23.27]"It certainly helps to keep the world constantly reminded [01:28.48]that the girls are not yet back. [01:31.73]A year ago, nearly everyone around the world knew [01:37.90]that 219 young women had been abducted by savages. [01:43.75]Suddenly, the whole world sort of moved on to other matters. [01:48.36]With this attention on their matter, [01:51.66]the whole world can galvanize itself again toward their rescue." [01:55.75]TIME magazine put Abubakar Shekau [01:59.27]on its list of "most influential" people. [02:02.07]He is the leader of Boko Haram, [02:04.97]which recently said it is allied with the Islamic State group. [02:10.36]Others on the list are fighting for social justice. [02:14.56]They include those who fight for transgender equality [02:19.15]-- protecting individuals who believe [02:22.11]that their sex at birth is in conflict with their true gender. [02:27.99]The list also includes those [02:30.45]who work to empower females and defend poor people. [02:35.35]Bryan Stevenson created the Equal Justice Initiative. [02:40.10]He fights racial discrimination [02:42.95]and speaks up in support of prisoners in the United States. [02:47.46]He says famous people have a responsibility [02:51.71]to talk about important issues. [02:54.36]"There's no question that the history of this country [02:57.06]has been shaped by artists and entertainers and celebrities [02:59.56]who took a stand on important social justice issues, [03:02.26]and I think this generation needs to do the same."
