[by:www.51voa.com] [00:00.00]¸ü¶àÌýÁ¦Çë·ÃÎÊ51VOA.COM [00:00.76]Federal and state police officers have exchanged gunfire [00:04.92]with members of an armed group in Oregon, killing one person. [00:09.40]The armed group had taken control of a federal wildlife area [00:14.76]in the eastern part of the state. [00:18.36]A shootout happened when police stopped cars carrying members of the group. [00:24.56]The protesters were reportedly driving to a meeting [00:28.40]with people who live near the wildlife area. [00:34.04]The Oregonian online newspaper [00:37.96]reported that the man who was killed was Robert Finicum. [00:42.76]AP reports that the leader of the group -- Ammon Bundy [00:47.96]-- and his brother Ryan have been arrested. [00:51.36]AP says Brian Cavalier, Shawna Cox, Ryan Waylen Payne, Joseph Donald O'Shaughnessy, [00:59.48]Peter Santilli and Jon Ritzheimer were also arrested. [01:05.84]It is not clear how many members of the group [01:08.92]are still in control of the federal wildlife area. [01:13.92]The group, which calls itself "Citizens for Constitutional Freedom," [01:19.76]illegally occupied the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge on January 2nd. [01:26.64]The Federal Bureau of Investigation and local officers [01:31.44]had watched the protest for weeks without intervening. [01:36.44]People from states as far away as Arizona and Ohio had joined the protest. [01:43.52]Some members of the group have for many years criticized [01:48.69]the federal government's management of public lands in the West. [01:54.48]Many people who live near the wildlife area [01:57.88]had been calling for the group to leave. [02:01.28]Many of them agree with the group's criticism of the federal government. [02:06.28]But they opposed the occupation of the wildlife area [02:10.28]because they feared it would end violently. [02:14.28]The group wants control of federal lands to be given to local officials. [02:20.00]The federal government controls about half of the land in the western United States. [02:26.16]Disputes about management of public lands have been taking place for many years. [02:33.40]In the 1970s, Nevada and other states pressured the federal government [02:38.88]to give state and local governments more control of the land. [02:44.24]People want to use the land for cattle grazing, [02:47.60]mining and timber harvesting. [02:51.36]I'm Mario Ritter.
