[00:14.24]Obama administration officials say [00:16.84]the president will meet Cuban President Raul Castro on Monday. [00:21.84]He will meet with members of Cuban civil society, [00:26.40]including human rights activists, [00:29.08]and will give a speech to the Cuban people on Tuesday. [00:33.84]Ted Henken is a professor at Baruch College in New York. [00:39.48]He has written about Cuba. [00:42.84]He will be in the country during President Obama's visit. [00:47.68]He told VOA that the president is traveling to Cuba [00:52.56]to ensure that relations between the United States and Cuba [00:57.56]are not reversed when he leaves office. [01:01.32]Henken said that Obama wants to speak directly to the Cuban people. [01:06.32]Henken added the president will meet and talk with whom "he chooses [01:11.88]and not just with whom the government wishes him to meet with only." [01:17.08]He said that the president and his aides [01:20.48]will work to convince Cuban officials to change their policies. [01:25.04]He said they will not stop pushing for the nation [01:29.12]to accept the American values of democracy [01:33.08]and respect for human rights. [01:36.56]But Henken said "the president has made it very clear [01:40.40]that it is the Cuban people who should [01:43.72]and who will decide their future, [01:46.68]and the United States will not be making demands on anyone in Cuba, [01:52.20]but will be communicating a message of friendship, [01:55.92]of assistance, of solidarity." [02:00.44]Henken said Obama also will explain to the Cuban people [02:04.52]that the United States is not [02:06.60]the reason for the island's poor economic conditions. [02:10.79]After his trip to Cuba, [02:13.80]Obama will travel to Argentina. [02:17.24]In his final months in office, [02:20.16]he will also visit Canada and Peru. [02:24.12]I'm George Grow.
