[00:13.24]The thieves may be high-ranking officials in the Malaysian government [00:19.60]and their family members. [00:22.92]The money generated by the fund [00:25.88]was supposed to be used for economic development projects [00:32.12]and to help raise the quality of life in Malaysia. [00:36.92]But instead, it was used to buy artwork by famous artists [00:44.04]such as Vincent Van Gogh, Claude Monet and Pablo Picasso. [00:52.72]More money was used to purchase expensive homes and a jet, [00:58.88]and to finance Hollywood movies. [01:03.12]The fund is called 1MDB. [01:07.40]It opened in 2009. [01:11.32]Early on, billions of dollars moved out of the fund [01:16.48]and into the account of a co-founder of oil company PetroSaudi International. [01:26.64]The money was supposed to fund a project between Malaysia and the oil company. [01:33.48]But the money went back into the account of a Malaysian government official [01:40.16]known as "Malaysian Official One." [01:45.32]Lynch would not identify the person known as "Malaysian Official One." [01:52.20]But observers believe it may be Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak. [02:00.35]Over the next five years, more than $3.5 billion [02:06.52]were transferred from the fund into private bank accounts in Switzerland. [02:13.72]The U.S. Department of Justice is working to recover [02:18.96]at least $1 billion in assets that were purchased with money stolen from the fund. [02:27.28]Those assets include the artwork [02:30.60]and some of the profits from the 2013 movie "The Wolf of Wall Street." [02:37.64]The case, filed in California, is in fact called "U.S. v. Wolf of Wall Street." [02:47.60]Najib's stepson and another Malaysian investor [02:52.64]started the production company that financed the film. [02:56.96]The money likely came from the 1MDB fund. [03:02.76]Lynch said, "Corrupt officials treated this public trust as a personal bank account." [03:11.44]The Department of Justice is involved [03:15.20]through its Kleptocracy Asset Recovery Initiative. [03:20.20]Lynch says the U.S. is involved [03:23.76]because money passed through American banks. [03:27.96]U.S. investment bank Goldman Sachs also raised money for the fund. [03:35.32]The complaint says banks in Singapore, Switzerland, [03:40.48]Luxembourg and the U.S. were used in the fraud. [03:45.38]Other governments are investigating the 1MDB fund, [03:51.28]including Switzerland and Singapore. [03:56.04]Members of the Malaysian government's opposition [03:59.96]will probably ask for Najib to resign. [04:04.56]But some of those same party members [04:08.32]say Najib's position as prime minister is probably safe. [04:14.40]Charles Santiago is a member of the opposition Democratic Action Party. [04:21.48]He says some organizations in Malaysia [04:25.56]will ask for an investigation based on the U.S. allegations. [04:31.96]But, he said, "This will not go far." [04:36.72]I'm Dan Friedell.
