[00:07.80]America's 28th President, Woodrow Wilson, [00:12.84]formed the National Park Service on August 25, 1916 [00:20.76]to "protect the wild and wonderful landscapes" in the United States. [00:27.28]One hundred years later, the organization manages nearly 34 million hectares of land. [00:36.80]The National Park Service oversees more than 400 parks, [00:42.76]historic sites, monuments and other areas. [00:48.40]The newest national park is in the northeast state of Maine. [00:54.84]President Barack Obama created the park on Wednesday. [01:00.56]It is called the Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument. [01:06.72]A family that started a successful business making skin care products donated the land. [01:14.72]The land is home to moose, black bears, coyotes, deer, bobcats, [01:24.20]snowshoe hares, fisher cats, bald eagles and Canada lynx. [01:33.00]Some national parks are well over 100 years old. [01:39.36]Yellowstone National Park in the western United States [01:44.68]was established in 1872 as the first national park in America.
