[00:12.08]The move follows Catalonia's declaration of independence from Spain last week. [00:20.04]Spain considers Catalonia's moves to create an independent state [00:27.76]a violation of the country's constitution. [00:32.88]Chief prosecutor Jose Manuel Maza [00:37.36]said Catalan leaders would also be charged [00:41.56]with inciting people to rebel and misuse of public money. [00:48.05]He accused the leaders of causing "an institutional crisis" [00:54.88]by leading efforts to separate Catalonia from Spain. [01:00.75]Maza did not name the individuals facing charges. [01:07.36]But they reportedly include Catalan leader Carles Puigdemont, [01:14.16]as well as members of his cabinet and legislative leaders in Catalonia. [01:22.36]A Spanish government official told the Associated Press [01:26.91]that Puigdemont had traveled to Brussels, Belgium. [01:32.72]Over the weekend, a Belgian official said it would not be "unrealistic" [01:39.48]for Puigdemont to request asylum in the country. [01:45.17]Catalonia's parliament declared independence from Spain Friday. [01:52.57]Hours later, Spain's Senate voted to give the Spanish government the authority [01:59.76]to take over direct rule of the northeastern area. [02:05.68]Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy then ordered the dismissal [02:11.28]of Catalonia's government and removed senior Catalan police officials. [02:18.96]He also called for new elections to be held December 21. [02:26.64]Despite the charges sought against Catalonia's leaders, [02:31.60]the region's major secessionist parties said Monday [02:36.44]they planned to take part in the elections. [02:41.44]Political observers said this decision signaled unspoken acceptance [02:47.68]by pro-independence parties of Spain's latest moves toward direct rule. [02:55.84]On Sunday, hundreds of thousands of anti-independence demonstrators [03:02.16]took to the streets of Barcelona to voice their opposition to Catalonia's declaration. [03:10.12]On Monday, most employees in Catalonia showed up for work, [03:16.40]ignoring calls by some pro-independence groups for civil disobedience protests. [03:24.20]Catalonia – a wealthy region with its own language and culture [03:31.24]- has long sought independence from Spain. [03:35.80]Catalan leaders held an independence referendum on October 1. [03:43.84]They said the results gave them clear authority to declare independence. [03:50.80]Spain's government and Constitutional Court [03:54.56]declared the referendum illegal.
