[00:13.80]At least two others were injured in the attack. [00:17.73]The front page of the Capital Gazette [00:22.39]read "5 Shot Dead at The Capital" [00:26.32]with photos of the five workers. [00:30.80]The paper is based in Annapolis, [00:33.72]the capital of the state of Maryland. [00:38.72]Reporters from the paper covered the story. [00:42.92]Some told about their personal experiences during the shooting. [00:48.48]Phil Davis, the paper's crime reporter, [00:52.76]hid under his desk while the shootings took place. [00:57.28]He tweeted, "there is nothing more terrifying [01:01.88]than hearing multiple people get shot [01:05.52]while you're under your desk [01:07.88]and then hear the gunman reload." [01:12.08]The opinion page of the paper, however, [01:16.00]did not comment about the incident. [01:19.28]It said "today we are speechless," [01:23.08]but promised to return the next day. [01:27.80]The paper's publisher said, [01:30.44]"We will honor our colleagues' memories by continuing our mission." [01:38.36]Officials called the violence a "targeted attack." [01:43.64]Those killed included Rob Hiaasen, [01:47.72]a writer and editor, [01:50.08]Wendi Winters, a correspondent [01:53.84]and Gerald Fischman, an editor. [01:57.44]Others killed included John McNamara, a sports writer, [02:03.44]and Rebecca Smith, a sales assistant. [02:08.96]Hiaasen was a reporter for the Baltimore Sun [02:12.88]for more than 20 years. [02:15.52]He was known as a thoughtful writer of unusual stories. [02:21.44]Winters was a reporter on community issues at the paper since 2002. [02:29.56]A former editor for the Capital Gazette told AP, [02:34.16]she was "the best part of the newspaper [02:37.92]in that she cared so much about the city." [02:42.68]McNamara had reported on Maryland sports for more than 20 years [02:48.60]and wrote two books on sports. [02:52.88]The gunman was identified as 38-year-old Jarrod Ramos. [02:59.88]He has been described [03:01.68]as not cooperating with police after his capture. [03:08.40]Ramos had a dispute of many years with the paper [03:12.76]over a story it had written about a criminal case against him. [03:19.36]He brought a legal case against the paper [03:22.64]for harming his reputation [03:25.04]which was thrown out in 2012. [03:30.40]Ramos is said to have sent threatening tweets [03:33.92]to some of the staff members years earlier. [03:38.88]Witnesses said the gunman shot through a glass door [03:43.48]and then began shooting at employees [03:46.57]in the newsroom using a long shotgun. [03:51.32]Police in Annapolis say Ramos also carried smoke bombs. [03:58.56]The shootings were one of the deadliest attacks [04:02.12]on reporters in U.S. history. [04:06.72]The Capital Gazette is one of the oldest papers in America. [04:13.00]In 1767, its publisher Anne Catherine Green [04:19.24]led opposition to the stamp tax [04:22.56]in the years leading up to the American Revolution. [04:27.92]On Thursday, as the newspaper's office became a crime scene, [04:33.80]employees gathered under a nearby parking garage [04:38.56]to report and edit stories and photos for Friday's papers. [04:46.52]Photographer Josh McKerrow told the Associated Press, [04:51.88]"It's what our colleagues would have done." [05:01.36]更多听力请访问51voa.com
