[ti:US Lawmakers: Taliban Invitation to Camp David Was a Bad Idea] [by:www.51voa.com] [00:00.00]更多听力请访问51VOA.COM [00:00.04]American President Donald Trump cancelled a planned meeting with Taliban leaders [00:07.18]and Afghan President Ashraf Ghani at Camp David. [00:13.24]Trump said Ghani and the Taliban leaders had been planning to travel to the United States late Saturday. [00:23.52]On Sunday, U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo [00:28.76]said that Trump "made the right decision" to call off peace talks. [00:35.56]Pompeo blamed the Taliban for continued attacks in Afghanistan. [00:42.64]Lawmakers from both parties said the meeting [00:46.56]at the presidential retreat near Washington should never have been planned. [00:53.76]"Camp David is where America's leaders met to plan our response [00:59.63]after al Qaeda, supported by the Taliban, killed 3,000 Americans on 9/11," [01:08.20]Republican Congresswoman Liz Cheney tweeted. [01:12.12]"No member of the Taliban should set foot there. Ever," she wrote. [01:19.52]Wednesday, September 11, will be the 18th anniversary of the attacks on the U.S. [01:26.64]by terrorist hijackers in which nearly 3,000 people died. [01:34.60]Senator Bob Menendez is the top Democrat on the Foreign Relations Committee. [01:41.40]He criticized the president saying, [01:44.48]"It's another example of the Trump administration's foreign policy, [01:49.50]which is a high-wire act... not in the strategic...effort of creating peace." [01:57.00]Republican Congressman Adam Kinzinger was an Air Force pilot [02:02.20]who served in Iraq and Afghanistan before winning a seat in the House of Representatives. [02:09.20]He said on Twitter, "Never should leaders of a terrorist organization [02:15.26]that hasn't renounced 9/11 and continue in evil be allowed in our great country. NEVER." [02:25.32]Secretary Pompeo defended Trump's foreign policy, [02:29.66]saying Trump's planned meetings at Camp David with the Taliban and Ghani [02:35.73]were planned to "further America's national interest." [02:40.96]The goal of the meetings was to end the U.S. war in Afghanistan. [02:46.96]The President was to have met with each group separately. [02:53.04]Negotiators for the U.S. and the Taliban have held peace talks for almost one year. [03:01.20]U.S. chief negotiator Zalmay Khalilzad last week said his team had written a draft agreement. [03:11.16]If approved by the president, it would call for 5,000 American soldiers [03:17.94]to leave five military bases in Afghanistan within 135 days. [03:26.24]Pompeo said Khalilzad had been told to return to the United States. [03:33.92]The longest war in American history started with U.S. military efforts [03:39.72]to destroy al-Qaida terrorist training grounds protected by the Taliban. [03:47.04]Al-Qaida launched the 2001 terrorist attacks on the U.S. [03:53.16]The hijacked planes struck the World Trade Center in New York City [03:57.84]and the Pentagon near Washington. [04:01.40]The fourth hijacked plane crashed in a field in Shanksville, Pennsylvania. [04:08.76]Trump said he decided to cancel the talks at Camp David [04:13.06]after a car bomb in Kabul killed 12 people last week, including a U.S. soldier. [04:21.88]Trump has promised to end U.S. involvement in Afghanistan. [04:26.72]But Pompeo said, "We're not going to just walk away, [04:31.72]if it's not right for American security interests." [04:36.92]The Taliban warned that U.S. military forces in Afghanistan [04:42.24]"will suffer more than anyone else" from Trump's decision. [04:47.56]The Taliban also said the U.S.'s "casualties and financial losses will increase, [04:55.38]and the U.S. role in international political interaction will be discredited even further." [05:04.44]The war in Afghanistan has continued for almost 18 years. [05:10.12]About 2,400 American soldiers have been killed [05:15.37]and more than 20,000 wounded in action. [05:20.44]The U.S. now has about 14,000 military members in Afghanistan [05:26.73]although Trump has said he will reduce that number sharply. [05:32.44]Because of the cancellation, a peace agreement reached [05:36.18]between the U.S. and the Taliban is now in question. [05:41.60]The Taliban said it had agreed to hold talks with the Ghani government on September 23. [05:50.64]I'm Caty Weaver. 更多听力请访问51VOA.COM
