[00:13.52]State officials reported more than 15,000 new infections on Sunday. [00:22.12]That number broke New York's record of more than 12,000 cases in one day, set in April. [00:31.44]Florida, however, is reporting far fewer deaths [00:36.48]than New York did during the height of its crisis. [00:41.88]COVID-19 deaths have been rising in the U.S., especially in the South and West. [00:50.28]But the levels are still well below numbers recorded in April. [00:56.88]Florida experienced a record-breaking week last week, [01:01.56]with 514 reported deaths. [01:06.16]That is an average of 73 deaths a day. [01:11.32]Three weeks ago, the state averaged 30 deaths a day. [01:16.36]Dr. Cindy Prins is a disease expert at the University of Florida. [01:23.60]She told The Associated Press, [01:26.16]"I really do think we could control this, [01:29.76]and it's the human element that is so critical." [01:34.92]She added, "It should be an effort of our country. [01:38.84]We should be pulling together when we're in a crisis, [01:42.76]and we're definitely not doing it." [01:47.52]The record number of daily cases was reported [01:51.12]one day after Florida's popular theme park Walt Disney World reopened. [01:58.76]Florida Governor Ron DeSantis ordered bars [02:02.76]to close in an effort to slow the virus spread. [02:07.20]But he has so far resisted calls for a statewide rule [02:12.52]for people to wear face coverings in public. [02:17.40]People have resisted face covering rules in other U.S. states, too. [02:23.56]On Sunday, U.S. Health and Human Services Department official [02:28.72]Brett Giroir said he thinks public face coverings [02:33.16]are "essential" to help slow the virus. [02:37.76]Giroir, a member of the White House coronavirus task force, [02:42.80]told ABC television, [02:45.16]"if we don't have that, we will not get control of the virus." [02:50.72]President Donald Trump, a Republican, [02:54.52]wore a face mask in public for the first time on Saturday. [03:00.92]The Democratic Speaker of the House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, [03:06.28]said Trump's action showed he might have "crossed a bridge." [03:12.52]Pelosi told CNN's "State of the Union" [03:15.88]that she hopes the move means the president "will change his attitude, [03:21.52]which will be helpful in stopping the spread of the coronavirus." [03:27.28]In Houston, Texas, two top Democratic officials [03:32.08]called for the nation's fourth-largest city to issue stay-at-home orders. [03:39.36]Hospitals there are struggling with increasing numbers of sick patients. [03:46.76]Around the world, other countries experiencing sharp increases [03:51.64]in COVID-19 cases include India, South Africa and Brazil. [03:59.28]India has the most cases after the U.S. and Brazil. [04:04.44]It has reported a record 28,637 cases in the past 24 hours. [04:14.28]Officials announced a weeklong lockdown beginning Tuesday [04:18.96]in the southern technology center of Bangalore. [04:23.28]The city includes offices of top tech companies, [04:27.88]including Microsoft, Apple and Amazon. [04:33.24]South Africa has reported more than 10,000 new daily cases [04:38.96]for the past several days, including 13,497 new infections on Saturday. [04:49.20]Johannesburg's densely populated Soweto township [04:53.88]is one of the virus hot spots. [04:56.88]With over 264,000 cases and nearly 4,000 deaths, [05:04.20]South Africa has reported more than 40 percent of all COVID-19 cases in Africa. [05:12.76]I'm Bryan Lynn. 更多听力请访问51VOA.COM
