[00:16.04]The unrest came after a Black man was shot in the back by a white police officer. [00:25.00]The president toured an area damaged by violence and fire. [00:31.32]He spoke to shop owners of businesses that were burned. [00:36.84]He also accused local officials of permitting the violence. [00:43.24]"They just don't want us to come in and then destruction is done," said Trump. [00:49.96]"These governors don't want to call [00:52.92]and the mayors don't want to call. They have to ask." [00:58.28]Protests in Kenosha began on August 23, [01:02.56]the night of Jacob Blake's shooting. [01:06.32]Video captured by a neighbor shows Blake was shot seven times in the back [01:13.16]by a police officer who was trying to make an arrest. [01:18.84]For three nights, police fired tear gas, rubber bullets [01:23.68]and smoke bombs to break up the demonstration. [01:28.36]Protesters set fires and destroyed some businesses. [01:34.88]The violence reached a high point on August 25 [01:39.60]when Kyle Rittenhouse, a 17-year-old, shot and killed [01:45.52]two protesters and injured another with a semi-automatic gun. [01:52.40]The Republican president's visit [01:55.16]came over the objections of local Democratic leaders. [02:00.92]Wisconsin's Governor Tony Evers wrote in a letter to Trump, [02:06.04]"I am concerned your presence will only delay our work [02:11.72]to overcome division and move forward together." [02:16.32]But Trump dismissed their appeals. [02:20.84]He said before boarding the presidential airplane, [02:24.96]"I think a lot of people are looking at what's happening [02:29.00]in these Democrat-run cities and they're disgusted. [02:33.92]They see what's going on [02:36.12]and they can't believe this is taking place in our country. [02:41.44]I can't believe it either. [02:43.68]One of the reasons I'm making a trip today and going to Wisconsin [02:49.56]is we've had such a big success in shutting down what would be... [02:54.92]a city that would have been burned to the ground by now." [03:00.36]Wisconsin is a battleground state. [03:03.92]Trump narrowly won the state in the 2016 election. [03:09.24]The latest polls, however, show former Vice President Joe Biden, [03:15.40]the Democratic Party candidate, [03:17.68]with a small lead for the upcoming November 3 election. [03:23.80]The trip gives Trump a chance to emphasize his "law and order" message [03:30.32]while Biden calls attention to Trump's efforts [03:33.80]dealing with the coronavirus health crisis. [03:38.32]In Kenosha, Wisconsin, Trump was met by both supporters [03:43.28]and protesters who were kept at a distance. [03:47.52]He praised law enforcement officers [03:50.80]but did not talk about the cause of the unrest. [03:55.48]The president also took credit [03:58.20]for sending in the National Guard to keep the peace. [04:03.24]Governor Tony Evers called for U.S. National Guard troops. [04:08.92]When asked by reporters if he had a message for Jacob Blake's family, Trump said, [04:15.84]"I feel terribly for anybody that goes through that. [04:20.24]As you know, it's under investigation." [04:24.72]During Trump's visit, Blake's family gathered at the street where he was shot [04:30.52]for what they called a "community celebration." [04:34.28]Blake's uncle said in a statement, "We don't need more pain and division [04:40.88]from a president set on advancing his campaign at the expense of our city."
