[00:15.60]The writings are the first new scrolls to be found in 60 years. [00:22.60]The writings are religious in nature. [00:25.80]They have lines written in Greek. [00:28.84]They are believed to have been hidden during a Jewish revolt [00:33.60]against the Romans nearly 1,900 years ago. [00:39.36]The Israel Antiquities Authority says, based on the writing style, [00:45.80]they likely come from the first century. [00:50.92]The new discovery adds to a larger group of Dead Sea Scrolls [00:56.92]- a collection of Jewish writings first found in desert caves [01:02.16]in the West Bank near Qumran in the 1940s and 1950s. [01:09.80]Some of the scrolls date to over two thousand years ago. [01:15.12]They include the earliest known copies of biblical writings [01:20.36]and documents explaining the beliefs of a little understood Jewish group. [01:27.16]The roughly 80 new pieces [01:30.16]were found in a place known as the "Cave of Horror." [01:35.16]It has the name because 40 human skeletons were found there [01:40.68]during digs in the 1960s. [01:44.76]The cave is about 40 kilometers south of Jerusalem. [01:49.48]The scrolls were found during an operation by the Israel Antiquities Authority. [01:56.52]The goal was to find scrolls [01:59.20]and other ancient objects to prevent possible stealing. [02:04.08]The writings are believed to have been part of a scroll [02:08.56]put in the cave during the Bar Kochba Revolt. [02:13.96]This was an armed Jewish revolt against Rome [02:18.04]during the time of Emperor Hadrian [02:21.08]in the years between 132 and 136. [02:26.04]Oren Ableman is a Dead Sea Scroll researcher [02:30.84]with the Israel Antiquities Authority. [02:34.44]He noted a difference between the newly discovered writings [02:39.04]and other known writings in Hebrew and Greek. [02:43.72]Joe Uziel is head of the Authority's Dead Sea Scrolls group. [02:49.44]He said "some of those differences are important." [02:54.40]Uziel added, "Every little piece of information that we can add, [03:00.36]we can understand a little bit better" [03:03.40]how the biblical writing came into its traditional Hebrew form. [03:09.64]In 1961, Israeli archaeologist Yohanan Aharoni [03:15.96]led a dig in the "Cave of Horror." [03:19.72]His team found nine pieces of writing [03:22.88]belonging to a scroll written in Greek. [03:26.44]Since then, no writings have been found during archaeological digs. [03:32.76]But many have been sold in illegal markets. [03:37.60]They were apparently taken from the caves. [03:40.72]For the past four years, [03:43.48]Israeli archeologists have launched a major campaign [03:47.92]to examine caves in the Judean Desert. [03:51.84]The aim is to find ancient objects before people damage the area, [03:58.04]destroying important information [04:00.72]in search of objects to be sold illegally. [04:04.32]The authority said since the beginning of the operation in 2017, [04:10.68]there have been almost no antiquities stolen in the Judean Desert. [04:17.40]I'm John Russell. 更多听力请访问51VOA.COM
