[00:14.92]One of the officers involved in the arrest, Derek Chauvin, [00:19.20]was found guilty of murder after a trial in April. [00:25.16]A 17-year-old girl was among those who recorded video [00:29.72]of Chauvin pressing his knee on Floyd's neck for over nine minutes. [00:36.16]The images angered people around the country. [00:40.08]Many of them took to the streets of cities [00:43.00]during the summer to protest the way police in America treat Black people. [00:48.72]Some of the protests turned violent. [00:53.32]A series of protests took place about one week after the incident [00:58.52]in a park across the street from the White House in Washington, D.C. [01:04.24]The treatment of Black people by police became an important part [01:08.40]of the U.S. presidential campaign. [01:11.80]Joe Biden won the election against former president Donald Trump. [01:18.60]Later, Biden called Chauvin's treatment of Floyd [01:23.68]"murder in the full light of day," and "a stain on our nation's soul." [01:32.44]Biden has been speaking with Floyd's family regularly over the last year. [01:38.72]He invited Floyd's family to the White House for a meeting on Tuesday. [01:45.48]Earlier this year, Biden said he wanted to be able to announce a new law on May 25. [01:54.00]The law, called the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act, [01:59.68]is supposed to permit police to be charged with crimes [02:04.72]if they do something bad while doing their work. [02:09.32]The U.S. House of Representatives passed the law in March. [02:13.52]It has not been approved by the U.S. Senate. [02:19.24]Legal experts say the girl's video [02:22.28]was the reason the jury found Chauvin guilty of murder. [02:27.08]While it was important evidence in the trial, [02:30.04]the video continues to make Black people upset. [02:34.76]Sheila Holden is an African-American mother of two [02:38.92]who lives in Maryland. [02:40.84]She said she feels pain every time she sees the video of Chauvin [02:47.08]holding Floyd on the ground with his knee. [02:51.52]"Seeing one person take the life of another [02:54.60]is something I had never seen," Holden said. [02:59.60]Bruce Brandon used to work as a bus driver in Washington, D.C. [03:05.56]He called the video "heartbreaking." [03:09.48]He and his family joined the protests last year. [03:13.60]"Taking part in the racial justice demonstrations gave us an outlet [03:19.44]to express our outrage over the amount of police brutality [03:24.96]against African-Americans," he said. [03:28.56]Allissa Findley is the sister of Botham Jean, a black man [03:34.36]who was killed by a white police officer in Dallas, Texas in 2018. [03:40.68]The officer, who was not working at the time, [03:44.28]went into Jean's apartment by mistake [03:47.80]and shot him, thinking he was trying to steal from her. [03:53.44]She was sent to prison for 10 years. [03:57.12]Findley told the Reuters news agency [04:00.16]seeing the video of Floyd is "traumatizing all over again." [04:06.44]One expert said seeing the images of Black people [04:10.40]being hurt by police can increase the pain. [04:14.80]Mary Frances Winters runs a business that works with companies [04:19.76]in an effort to create better work environments [04:22.84]for people of different backgrounds. [04:25.68]She wrote a book called Black Fatigue, [04:28.96]about the health problems that come from racism. [04:33.28]She said all of the problems in society create [04:37.64]"psychological and physiological ailments." [04:43.40]Researchers from the U.S. National Academy of Sciences agree. [04:48.16]In a study, they found that the mental health of Black Americans [04:53.16]is worse in the days following highly-publicized violent acts against Black people. [05:01.88]The leader of a Black religious center in Atlanta told CNN television news [05:07.80]that he thought "all of Black America [05:11.36]is suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder." [05:16.12]A mental health expert called it "toxic stress" [05:19.68]and said the constant worry Black people feel can affect future generations. [05:26.84]Winters said the U.S should start to place more attention [05:32.16]on the mental health of African-Americans. [05:34.72]She said it is not easy to "bounce back" from years of racism. [05:41.52]"We have to challenge that idea," she said. [05:44.96]I'm Dan Friedell. 更多听力请访问51VOA.COM
