[00:07.44]The European Union has recently approved some sorts of insects [00:13.12]as an acceptable food product. [00:16.96]Insects provide many nutrients and are an environmentally friendly food. [00:24.24]The food Laurent Veyet prepares is not for those with little bravery. [00:32.72]However, what he is preparing may point [00:36.24]to the future of feeding a growing world population. [00:42.32]One of his foods is a prawn salad with yellow mealworms. [00:48.56]It includes insects on a bed of vegetables with grasshoppers [00:54.20]covered in chocolate, a food usually meant for sweets. [01:00.76]The restaurant is located in Paris among others [01:04.68]with outdoor seating and plenty of sunlight. [01:09.28]Eaters who are ready to try something different [01:12.88]approve of Veyet's complex foods. [01:18.44]The Parisian cook talked about the perfect meal for first-timers. [01:25.20]He was preparing a pasta made with crushed mealworms, [01:30.80]sweet potatoes and young insects cooked on the stove. [01:37.08]He said, "there are some really interesting flavors. [01:41.16]Not many people could say they don't like that." [01:46.04]The European Food Safety Agency, EFSA, [01:50.76]in January said the mealworm is acceptable for humans to eat. [01:56.72]By May, EFSA approved its sale on the market. [02:03.48]The agency is considering more than 12 other requests [02:07.72]to approve other insect-based food products. [02:11.52]They include crickets and locusts, [02:14.80]insects that are usually found in fields. [02:19.72]Mealworms, and insects more generally, [02:23.72]could provide a sustainable food source [02:26.84]that produces low greenhouse gases for the future. [02:32.32]Soheil Ayari was eating with his two daughters. [02:36.88]He approved of the food. [02:39.96]He said, "I feel like I am in a traditional restaurant." [02:44.60]He said only the idea behind what he ate was different. [02:49.72]He continued to say, "and honestly, the tastes [02:54.00]are very similar (to traditional food)." [02:58.36]Ayari's young daughter also enjoyed the food: [03:02.08]"it's environmentally friendly and, what's more, it's good." [03:08.60]Veyet grows his mealworms on site. [03:13.52]He feeds them cooked grains and vegetables. [03:17.72]While the mealworm may not look like something worth eating, [03:21.88]it is in fact the larvae of the darkling beetle. [03:26.88]These beetles are rich in protein, fat and other nutrients. [03:32.72]The mealworm can be used in many different meals. [03:37.72]It can be cooked whole and eaten, [03:39.96]or it can be ground to help make foods like bread. [03:44.84]Stefan De Keersmaecker is a health and food safety spokesman [03:50.64]at the European Commission. [03:53.00]He said, "insects are nutritious." [03:56.48]He also said that insects can help us change to a more healthy [04:01.36]and sustainable diet and food system. [04:04.68]There are two battles Veyet must win. [04:08.84]He needs to win over public opinion [04:12.12]and learn how to combine the taste of insects with other foods. [04:17.20]He said that he must find the right taste [04:21.04]as well as the right food combinations. [04:25.32]He said that is very interesting to do [04:28.76]and any cook would tell you the same. [04:32.40]I'm Dan Friedell. [04:34.08]更多听力请访问51VOA.COM
