[ti:Russia Tests Way to Disconnect from Worldwide Internet] [by:www.51voa.com] [00:00.00]更多听力请访问51VOA.COM [00:01.92]Russia disconnected from the worldwide internet [00:05.36]during tests in June and July, [00:08.60]a Russian news service, RBC, reported on Thursday. [00:14.56]The information for the report came from documents [00:18.44]from a Russian internet security working group. [00:22.76]Russia passed a law in late 2019 that aims to protect [00:27.44]the Russian part of the internet from outside threats. [00:31.68]The "sovereign internet" law [00:34.20]was in answer to what Russia called the "aggressive nature" [00:38.36]of the United States' national cyber security policies. [00:43.72]The law increased Moscow's control over connections [00:47.64]within Russia to the worldwide network [00:50.44]and caused concern among free speech activists. [00:56.12]They feared the move would strengthen government power [00:59.28]over the country's cyberspace, which is called "Runet" [01:02.88]because the country's internet addresses end in "ru." [01:07.84]Held from June 15 to July 15, [01:11.44]the tests involved all four of Russia's major telecoms companies. [01:17.48]RBC reported that someone in the working group said early results [01:23.08]showed they were successful and added, [01:26.36]"The purpose of the tests is to determine the ability of the Runet [01:31.24]to work in case of external distortions, blocks and other threats." [01:38.16]RBC also said the capability of physically disconnecting [01:42.64]the Russian part of the internet was tested. [01:46.88]It was not immediately clear how long the disconnection lasted [01:51.24]or whether there were any noticeable breaks in internet traffic. [01:57.24]The law says that tests should be carried out every year, [02:01.44]but RBC said operations were called off in 2020 [02:06.16]due to problems caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. [02:11.20]The central government of Russia was aware of the tests, [02:14.96]spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said. [02:18.88]He said they were timely and that Russia had to be ready for anything. [02:24.40]The legislation also seeks to pass Russian web traffic and data [02:29.60]through state-controlled points. [02:32.60]It also called for a national Domain Name System [02:36.32]to allow the internet to continue working even [02:39.44]if Russia is cut off. [02:42.72]A domain name system, or DNS, is like a phone book [02:47.08]organizing the internet locations of each website. [02:52.04]In June 2019, President Vladimir Putin [02:56.08]said the government had to be certain that the Runet [02:59.44]could work in a safe and steady way. [03:03.08]The goal is to guard against problems caused [03:05.88]if networks outside of Russia's control in other countries [03:10.00]were turned off or infected with computer viruses. [03:15.40]State communications agency Roskomnadzor [03:19.36]said the tests aim to improve the security [03:22.04]of Russia's internet systems and keep them whole. [03:26.52]It said Roskomnadzor had used the equipment installed for the test [03:32.28]to slow down the speed of social network Twitter since March. [03:37.72]That action came after Twitter refused [03:40.60]to remove content Moscow says is illegal. [03:45.04]I'm Jill Robbins. 更多听力请访问51VOA.COM
